How to Become a
Nail Tech in Ohio

Ohio licenses nail technicians as manicurists, through the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board. There are four requirements.

  • Be 16 or older with the equivalent of a 10th-grade education. No high school diploma required.
  • Complete 200 hours of board-approved training, set by Ohio Revised Code Section 4713.28. That is among the lowest requirements in the country and the shortest path to a beauty license in Ohio. Esthetics requires 600 hours and cosmetology requires 1,500.
  • Pass the state board exams, written and practical, administered by the board itself. Passing is 75%. Preparation is built into the Manicuring curriculum.
  • Apply for the license through the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board.

Beyond the basic requirements, Mason Anthony’s Manicuring program incorporates important industry training such as marketing and clientele, recent trends in nail art, and a working salon environment to set yourself up for success in the manicuring industry.

Where Manicuring Graduates Work

The nail industry is growing, driven by new technologies and the rising visibility of nail artists on social media. Licensed manicurists in Ohio work in nail salons and spas, full-service salons, resort and hotel spas, and independent booth rental. Many build a personal client following and eventually rent their own space or open a salon.
